Private Debt Fundraising Sinks in Q3 2020
So far in 2020, $68.9bn have been secured by 123 private debt funds closed. Compared to the same period over the last five years, these mark the second lowest fundraising figures. As we have seen in previous years, private debt fundraising figures in Q1 and Q3 are always relatively weak in comparison to Q2 and Q4. In 2020, this trend has continued, although the fall has been significant between Q2 and Q3. During Q3, 20 funds closed, raising and aggregate $8.4bn, down from 60 funds closed and $38bn secured in Q2. This marks the lowest fundraising figures for a quarter in recent years – in the last five years these figures weren’t seen since Q1 2016 were $12bn were secured. Over the last five years, the wider trend has been that in Q4 fundraising experiments peaks, with 2016 the high-water mark. We expect figures to increase over the last quarter of the year, although the rise would be significantly lower.
