Private Debt Fundraising Slightly Slows in 2020
Since 2015, more than 200 private debt funds have been closing each year. Even with the slowdown that the COVID-19 pandemic caused in the alternatives assets industry, private debt fund managers were able to maintain this trend and closed 202 funds in 2020. However, collectively, those funds secured $118bn, the lowest annual total since 2015 and a 11% decrease compared to 2019. Despite this slowdown, the more established fund managers are seeing some degree of success in the asset class. A significant 38.5% of total capital raised in private debt over 2020 has been directed towards the top 10 largest funds. Three of such funds surpassed the $6bn: HPS Mezzanine Partners 2019 which closed at $11bn, Clearlake Capital Partners VI which reached $7bn and GSO European Senior Debt Fund II which closed at $6.1bn.
