The post-pandemic monetary environment has spurred the growth of the global private debt industry. Assets under management, standing at $1.6tn as of March 2023, almost doubled compared to the end of 2019. Dry powder hit an all-time high of $488bn, as investors were drawn to the risk-return profile of the asset class, as well as the inflation protection it offers. However, in March 2023, dry powder made up 30% of AUM, just under the 10-year average of 34%. The challenge for private debt managers now is to find opportunities in an increasingly competitive and economically challenging market.
