Private debt deal activity in North America decreased in 2023 as aggregate deal value fell to $42.3bn in 2023 year-to-date (YTD) from $172.5bn in 2022. Despite this year’s slowdown, private debt in the energy and utilities sector has seen an increase in disclosed aggregate deal value this year. Although deal numbers in the sector have remained steady over the past few years, aggregate deal value declined in 2021, before rebounding to $2bn in 2022 to $4.1bn in 2023 YTD. At the same time, the US government aims to invest nearly $11bn to transition rural electrical grids to renewable energy in collaboration with the private sector through the Inflation Reduction Act.
