Momentum in Canada’s private debt market has all but disappeared over the past two years. The number of investments fell from 64 in 2020 to 40 in 2021. Deal value (US$) has slumped from a recent high of $10.8bn in 2019 to $4.1bn in 2020 and just $2.6bn in 2021, as a wide range of financial support measures were made available for companies of all sizes. In contrast, the number of deals in the US remained steady, with a slight decline from 832 deals in 2019 to 785 deals in 2021. The next year will show the extent to which the decline in Canada was pandemic-related or part of a larger trend in the region.
