Private debt is growing fast in South Korea and shows no signs of slowing. Despite the relative immaturity of the market, a number of US private debt firms have set up shop in the country. There are now 119 active PD investors in Korea. Deal activity is also rising, and there have been 14 private debt deals in 2023 so far with an aggregate value of $3.9bn, up from 2022’s amount of $2.4bn. Around half the deals this year have been in the medical devices industry, which is a target growth sector for the country. The South Korean government aims to establish the country as one of the top five medical device exporters, and is investing $7.6bn in R&D between 2023-2027 in collaboration with the private sector.
